Patient Updates

Breyeli, the unresponsive 12 month old, died this morning.  Her mom and dad were understandably very  sad.  We drove the family and Breyeli home since they lived far away so that they could bury her.  Sometimes it's hard to understand why things happen the way they do.  I wonder if we could have helped that baby if she was brought in a week ago.  Breyeli's mom had just given birth 1 month ago and they didn't have any money so they feared bringing her to the hospital and getting a big bill.  This morning when she died they sent word to their town and Breyeli's dad arrived a hour later because he had to ride his bicycle all the way here.  I noticed the toe strap of his flip flops were broken but he still wears them.  I feel Breyeli died of injuries we could have helped with had she come in sooner but God didn't intend it to happen that way.

Then we have Milagro.  She almost assuredly should not have survived her early birth but yet here she is and still growing.

She is now off the oxygen and eagerly eating her mother's pumped milk from a bottle.  She eats from a bottle since it's less work then eating directly from the breast and we want her to save all her calories for growing.  She's now over 3lbs!

"Iain" (as we have nicknamed him on for privacy sake) is doing well.  He is healing well and had skin grafts placed on his inner thighs this week.  They seem to be taking and hopefully will continue to do so.

Iain is learning slowly but surely to self-soothe his fears and cope with anxiety.  However, he still has a long way to go with this injury.  We recently had to cast his legs to get him to fully extend them and stretch the skin behind his knees.  We're trying to avoid contractures (tightening of scarred skin tissue).  We're hoping to take them off this week and encourage him to get walking.
